Characteristics of Siemens SIMATIC S7-1200

The SIMATIC S7-1200 is a compact, modular automation system that, thanks to its small size, is ideal for applications requiring the implementation of both basic and advanced logic algorithms. Designed for easy integration with operator panels and HMI, it is also suitable for operation in networked systems. Its compact design, affordable price and high efficiency make the S7-1200 controller an optimal solution for many applications.

The SIMATIC S7-1200 embodies the innovative concept of "Totally Integrated Automation" (TIA), in which the S7-1200 series, combined with the TIA Portal software, offers exceptional adaptability and convenience in design, enabling an effective solution to any application challenge. With the S7-1200, even the most complex tasks become easier to perform. The system ranks among compact automation solutions that include SIMATIC S7-1200 controllers and SIMATIC HMI Basic operator panels. The ability to program the entire control system using a single software significantly speeds up program development and reduces costs. TIA Portal also offers the STEP 7 programming tool for the S7-1200 controller and the WinCC project development tool for Basic operator panels.

S7-1200 controllers are equipped with:

  • PROFINET interface,
  • High-speed I/O for motion supervision systems,
  • Built-in analog inputs that limit the use of additional expansion modules,
  • 4 pulse generators that can generate PWM (Pulse Width Modulation), PTO (Pulse Train Output) waveforms and up to 6 high-speed counters.

Built-in I/O line interfaces provide access to 6...14 inputs and 4...10 outputs.

STEP 7 for SIMATIC S7-1200

STEP 7 provides an intuitive design environment for creating the control logic needed for an application, configuring HMI visualizations and managing communications. To streamline the design process, STEP 7 is equipped with two distinct view types: a task-oriented view (Portal View) and a project-oriented view based on project elements (Project View). The user is free to choose which of these views better suits his or her needs, enabling more efficient use of the system's functionality. Switching between the two perspectives is possible with a single click. The portal view includes: portals for different tasks; tasks for the selected portal; a selection panel for selected actions; change to the project view. The project view, on the other hand, includes: menus and toolbars; project navigator; workspace; task tabs; supervision window; change to portal view; edit bar.

Gathering all components in one place provides easy access to every element of the project. For example, the supervision window shows properties and details for a selected object in the workspace. By selecting another component, we will see configurable properties for the new object. The supervision window also contains tabs with diagnostic information and additional messages. By displaying all open editors, work becomes faster and more efficient. A single click is enough to switch between open editors. It is also possible to show two editors vertically or horizontally at the same time, allowing you to easily move data between them using the drag-and-drop function.

STEP 7 benefits for SIMATIC S7-1200

  • CPU mode change,
  • Developable instructions and version selection,
  • appearance and configuration modification for STEP 7,
  • disconnecting devices from the network for a specified period of time,
  • improving the data block (DB) call type,
  • simple dragging of elements between editors,
  • easier access to project and global libraries,
  • virtual "disconnection" of modules without loss of configuration,
  • adding inputs and outputs to instructions in a ladder or function block,
  • inserting instructions into a user program and quickly accessing them from the toolbar.
