Siemens SIMATIC S7-1500 characteristics
Characteristics of Siemens SIMATIC S7-1500
Siemens SIMATIC S7-1500 controllers have a modular design and consist of up to 32 modules that can be individually combined. The S7-1500 automation system supports single-level configurations in which all modules are mounted on a single DIN rail. Such a system includes:
- Controller - a CPU of various capacities with integrated PROFINET interface or PROFINET and PROFIBUS interface for connection of distributed I/O and communication between programmer, operator panel, other SIMATIC controllers or devices outside the Siemens family. Various processor versions are available for the SIMATIC S7-1500:
- standard processors (MFP version) capable of executing C/C++ code on the controller,
- compact processors with digital and analog inputs and outputs, as well as counter inputs or high-speed outputs for integrated technology functions directly in the processor,
- Fail-Safe processors (MFP version capable of executing C/C++ code on the controller) for executing standard and security-related programs on the same computer,
- Technology processors with enhanced Motion Control functions.
- Signal modules for digital and analog input/output.
- Technology modules, e.g., for high-speed counting, position detection or measurement functions.
- Communication modules and communication processors to expand controllers with communication interfaces
Additional modules to be used
- Power supply modules (PS) for powering the internal electronics of S7-1500 modules via the backplane bus in case the processor output power to the backplane bus is not sufficient for all connected modules.
- Load current (PM) power modules for connecting SIMATIC S7-1500 to 120/230 V AC supply voltage.
- Interface modules for connecting distributed I/O based on the S7-1500.
Input/output modules
Types of modules for use in SIMATIC S7-1500/ET 200MP:
- standard and safety digital input/output modules,
- digital input/output modules,
- analog input/output modules,
- technology modules for counting and positioning,
- communication modules for IO-Link and point-to-point communication and bus connection.
To provide users with optimal application scalability, different classes of modules are available and are labeled accordingly.
- BA (Basic) - simple, economical modules without diagnostics and parameters.
- ST (Standard) - modules with module- or load group-specific diagnostics (or if applicable with parameters for analog modules, 0.3% accuracy class).
- HF (High Feature) - modules with channel-specific diagnostics and parameter setting, as well as support for isosynchronous mode. For analog modules, 0.1% accuracy class, increased immunity and galvanic isolation.
- HS (High Speed) - modules with extremely short filtering and conversion times for very high-speed applications, with support for isosynchronous mode (e.g., 8-channel analog modules with a basic execution time of 62.5 µs, regardless of the number of active channels).
Communication interfaces
Process communication via PROFINET IO
SIMATIC S7-1500 is connected to the PROFINET IO bus system via the integrated PROFINET interface and enables distributed automation configuration with defined response times and highly precise plant behavior. Distributed I/O via PROFINET IO is treated from the user's perspective as centralized I/O (same configuration, addressing and programming).
Process communication via PROFIBUS DP
SIMATIC S7-1500 (not S7-1500R/H) is connected to the PROFIBUS DP bus system via a communication module or CPU with integrated PROFIBUS DP interfaces. CPUs or communication modules with PROFIBUS DP interfaces enable distributed automation configuration with high speed and simple operation. Distributed I/O via PROFIBUS DP is treated from the user's perspective as centralized I/O (same configuration, addressing and programming).
Data transfer via Ethernet
The S7-1500 can be connected to an Industrial Ethernet bus system via an integrated PROFINET interface or a communication module.
Data transfer via PROFIBUS
SIMATIC S7-1500 (not S7-1500R/H) can be connected to a PROFIBUS bus system via a communication module or CPU with integrated PROFIBUS DP interfaces.
Data transfer via point-to-point communication modules
Efficient point-to-point connections can be realized using point-to-point communication modules.
Data transmission via IO-Link communication modules
Up to eight IO-Link devices can be connected via the CM 8xIO-Link communication module.
