The interface between the S7-300 controller and the process is signal modules. The wide range of I/O modules ensures that the PLC controller configuration perfectly adapts to the application's needs. Input/output modules (binary and analog) vary in terms of the number of channels, isolation, diagnostics, current and voltage ranges and interrupt handling. Modules with 8-32 binary channels or 2-8 analog channels are available. The 32-channel modules ensure efficient use of space in the control rack.

Simulation input/output modules can be placed anywhere in the controller cassette. They are used to verify the correctness of the application. Simulation modules have switches to simulate input states and LEDs showing the output status. If we need to reserve space or address space for modules that will be added later, we can use blank modules known as Dummy Modules.

Additional advantage

Another advantage is the quicker and easier wiring of signal modules thanks to the TOP CONNECT technology (not applicable to compact units). TOP CONNECT offers pre-wired 20 and 40 terminal connection strips. Ends of certain wires can be directed to dedicated terminal blocks or blocks with separating relays.

Replacement and upgrade

Configuration and parameterization of modules are carried out via the STEP7 software. Configuration information is stored in the central memory of the CPU. When a module is replaced, this information is automatically transferred to the new module. Using newer module versions does not require an update of the controller software. One configuration can be applied to different controllers, for example in the case of duplicating a machine.

Interruptions and process events

Many of the modules allow for diagnosing measurement paths and verifying the correctness of signals originating from the process (process interruptions). Thanks to this, the system instantly responds to any events or errors.

Function and technological modules

The S7-300 modules allow the system to be adapted to almost any task and application. In addition to the typical input/output modules, advanced function modules are available. Communication with industrial networks is realized both through CPU-integrated communication interfaces and communication processors. These modules operate independently from the main PLC processor.

Point-to-Point communication processors and modules for S7-300

Communication processors are designed for the S7-300 to communicate with multiple industrial systems and networks. Additionally, communication modules serve as programmable serial ports, facilitating point-to-point communication with automation devices from various suppliers. By utilizing the CP PtP communication modules, point-to-point communication with the S7-300 system becomes effective and more cost-effective. Such a connection is particularly beneficial when connecting a smaller number of external devices (standard RS 232 or RS 485) that already have defined communication protocols to the S7-300.

The housing of the CP PtP communication processors is made of plastic and is equipped with a set of signaling diodes that present diagnostic information. Accompanying the communication modules is a configuration set that includes sample implementations, ready-made configuration masks, technical documentation and the necessary software libraries that support communication between the CPU and CP. Configuration information is stored directly in the CPU memory. In situations where module replacement is required, they are automatically transferred to the new module immediately upon startup of the controller.
